Pangaia’s PLNTFiber™ Tracksuit | Is It Really Worth the Hype?
Disclaimer: The hoodie and track pants I’m wearing were gifted to me by Pangaia. However, this is not a sponsored post and the opinions expressed below are my own.
What is Pangaia’s PLNTFiber™ made of?
This lightweight track pants and hoodie are from Pangaia’s PLNTFiber™ collection which is made from bamboo, eucalyptus, seaweed, and nettle. That’s definitely a very innovative concoction of plant materials that we haven’t seen from other brands.
The fabric is lightweight and soft to the touch. I’d say it’s most reminiscent of bamboo, which makes sense as that’s the main component (representing 60% of the composition).
Although Pangaia stormed onto the sustainability scene with gusto and almost feel like a household name, they weren’t a brand that was on my radar. Naturally, I was honored and excited when they approached me to do a collaboration for this new collection.
When ordering clothing and accessories online I always struggle trying to decide which size would work best so I figured sizing would be the ideal topic to address first. Keep reading for my tips on selecting the right size from this unisex brand in addition to whether or not this brand is vegan, sustainable, worth the higher price tag, and of course my tips on how to style a tracksuit.
What size Pangaia tracksuit should I get?
I would recommend for women to size one or two sizes down from their normal size for this PLNTFiber™ tracksuit. As Pangaia’s clothing is unisex, a size small is really designed to fit a size small man and the normal fit is already on the roomy side.
I’m wearing a size XS track pants and a size S hoodie. While I wanted the pieces to have an oversized fit, I could have gone with a size XXS pants as even the size XS are a bit too long for my petite (160 cm or 5’ 3”) frame. The rest of the fit is the right amount of bagginess, they’re just a tad long.
The same goes for the hoodie, which I’m wearing in a size S. It definitely has an oversized fit and I think it still would have had I ordered the XS or even the XXS.
My typical size is an XS or S so if you’re especially petite and your normal size is an XS or smaller then you might need to shop within the kid’s section as the smallest adult size available is an XXS.
Note that these sizing recommendations are limited to the hoodie and track pants in the PLNTFiber™ collection as sizing for other collections could vary. For more sizing suggestions directly from Pangaia check out their size guide.
Is Pangaia true to size?
For men, I would consider the sizing to be true to size. If you’re typically a size M in men’s then I would order a size M in this hoodie and track pants. However, women should size down one to two sizes. If you’re typically a size M in women’s then I would order a size S or XS in this tracksuit depending on how baggy you like the fit to be.
Note that these sizing recommendations are strictly for the hoodie and track pants in the PLNTFiber™ collection as sizing for other collections might be different. For more sizing suggestions directly from Pangaia check out their size guide.
Is Pangaia a vegan brand?
No, Pangaia isn’t a 100% vegan brand as they have some items made of recycled wool and recycled cashmere. While this used to be a vegan brand when it was initially established back in 2019, they have since introduced wool and cashmere into their lines and so they can no longer be considered 100% vegan.
The good news is that they are constantly creating innovative materials to replace fibers that are traditionally sourced from animals. A couple of examples are their grape leather (to replace animal leather) and FLWRDWN™ (to use in lieu of animal feathers).
Is Pangaia an ethical and sustainable brand?
Pangaia scores a rating of “good” on the sustainability app Good On You, which is their second-highest rating. While not a perfect brand (is there such a thing?) I feel they are doing a good job of being transparent, inclusive, and thinking about the environment. The brand’s name itself translates to all-inclusive (Pan) Mother Earth (Gaia), which tells me the brand thought about its message and purpose from its inception.
Pangaia is making significant efforts to be a sustainable and ethical brand through their development of innovative materials, commitment to a transparent supply chain (to ensure they aren’t contributing to modern slavery and that they meet their environmental standards), and adherence to the Sustainable Development Goals (established by the United Nations) since the company began. For a company as large as they are, I’m thrilled to see they are putting sustainable and ethical practices at the forefront of their brand.
Is Pangaia clothing worth it?
The hoodie I’m wearing runs $195 (£153) and the track pants are $160 (£125) so I would consider them to be investment pieces. While there are definitely cheaper loungewear brands out there, if sustainability, an ethical supply chain, and innovative materials are important to you then I would say Pangaia is worth the extra investment.
These lightweight pieces are also the perfect thickness for three-season wear. Arguably that makes them a better choice than the brand’s thicker tracksuits because you’ll be able to wear them for longer throughout the year.
With comfort being a more prominent requirement for our fashion items these days you might get even more wear out of each item than you may have in the past. Let’s use the price-per-wear calculation to help decide whether Pangaia’s clothing is worth the higher initial investment.
If you plan to wear each ~$195 piece 30 times a year for the next 5 years, that would equal a little more than $1 per wear. If you compare that with an item you buy from a fast fashion brand for $30 that you get 10 wears out of then the Pangaia item seems like the better value.
In theory, Pangaia clothing is expected to last longer and have less of an environmental impact than most of its competitors. I haven’t had the opportunity to fully test the durability of this tracksuit so I’m interested to see how well they will hold up with regular wear.
How do you style a Pangaia tracksuit?
A Pangaia tracksuit is so chic and fashionable it hardly needs any additional styling. Popularized by celebrities and influencers, this tracksuit is the ultimate look to travel in style. And when I eventually get back in the air I know what I’ll be wearing for the flight.
You can never go wrong with a full monochrome look and styling your tracksuit with trainers is the simplest styling method whether you’re traveling, headed on a casual outing, or lounging at a friend’s house. And when you’re working with one in a punchy color, like flamingo pink, not much else is needed to make an impact. Of course, a Sans Beast bum bag in sunflower yellow also makes for a joyous color combination.
Other styling ideas are wearing it under a trench coat with running shoes; with white socks and Birkenstocks in a matching color; with a bucket hat or baseball cap and tennis shoes; tucked into combat boots; or glammed up with heels and a blazer. Pairing with an expensive (-looking) purse is also always welcomed. This tracksuit effortlessly puts the glam in casual attire no matter how you style it.
