Equestrian style isn’t just for autumn, in fact, it might just be the ideal “trend” to wear this spring (and every spring 🌷).

The most basic way to pull a little equestrian into your look is by simply adding a pair of riding boots. It doesn’t need to get any fancier than that as riding boots are so blatantly equestrian. And by sporting a rubber pair (such as the vegan equestrian boots by Fouganza that I’m modeling in two of the looks below) you can fare all those April showers in style ☔️.

If you’re looking to take your equestrian look a bit further, the color palette is also an important consideration. With earthy browns and mossy greens being popular for spring, why not use this opportunity to incorporate these grounded shades into an equestrian-style look. Here I show you how to wear riding boots with a mini skirt or tucked into dress pants and how to make a victorian-style equestrian look out of an oversized blazer and midi skirt.

Prince of Wales check blazer + Navy Slacks + Black Riding Boots

An oversized Prince of Wales check blazer worn casually over a blue-green turtleneck and navy trousers provides this equestrian look with an up-to-date feel. And tucking straight-leg dress pants into tall black riding boots gives a very on-trend baggy look. This outfit feels like something Princess Diana would have styled so effortlessly.

Other small details that help to add to the equestrian vibe of the outfit are a vintage gold horse necklace, gold belt buckle, and cognac saddle bag. If your clothing items don’t give you enough of a feel for a look, you can easily inject a particular vibe simply with the addition of selected accessories. To prove to you the power of accessories, give my other post a read where I show you How to Dress Girly, Sporty & Grungy Using Vegan Accessories.

Fitted Blazer + Frilly Mini Skirt + Equestrian Boots

Equestrian style doesn’t necessarily mean strait-laced; in fact, feel free to add a little frill to your equestrian looks. Whether that’s in the form of a girly skirt or by way of a victorian-style ruffle blouse, they both complement a horse-inspired look as well as exude a playful childlike spirit.

In addition to radiating equestrian vibes, tall riding boots can also offer some skin coverage to balance out a thigh-gracing mini skirt. If this is still too much skin for you adding a pair of leggings or tights offers privacy as well as warmth.

A rich and earthy color palette is typical in equestrian fashion and by purposely keeping the tones minimalistic it lets the lilac purse pop against the neutral colors and lavender pairs so beautifully with chestnut and tobacco brown. Brown and lavender is an unexpected color combo that can be used to add some life to a neutral-toned look regardless of whether you’re dressing for spring or fall. If you’re at a loss for other colors to pair with brown see my How to Style Brown With Blue post where I show you three brown and blue looks as well as tips for other creative combinations.

Oversized Checkered Blazer + Corduroy Midi Skirt + Ankle Boots

Harmfreefashion models vegan & thrifted fashion (oversized vintage blazer, corduroy midi skirt, Stella McCartney cognac Popper bag, black ankle boots & illesteva Palm Beach sunglasses).

Even without the assistance of riding boots, you can pull off some equestrian vibes. This look is more of a victorian interpretation of the style (sans the steampunk hat 🎩) that plays with proportions, colors, and textures.

A vintage caramel-colored midi skirt in Manchester cord gives some western ’70s vibes while adding texture, movement, and volume, while an oversized checked blazer in earth tones offers victorian-equestrian elegance when cinched at the waist with a vegan snakeskin belt.

One thing to be mindful of when working with oversized pieces is that they can easily overwhelm a petite frame. Using a belt to create the appearance of a Marilyn Monroe-esque hourglass figure adds definition to your waist and gives shape to a baggy outfit.

Choosing ankle boots rather than riding boots also helps to counterbalance the bulk of the blazer and skirt by drawing the eye to the slimmest portion of your leg.

Apply these quick and simple tips when styling voluminous or oversized items to help accentuate your physique.
